Lessons learned on Bluenose II

“Spending fifteen years on board Bluenose II was a career in itself but it has certainly affected the way I have continued to perform my duties in my current job.

I have remained in the marine industry as my fifteen years resulted in a Watch Keeping ticket and a desire to “play on boats”. Learning the many jobs of deck hand from cleaning toilets to setting top sails gave me a well-rounded range of skills and a level of self-confidence that I didn’t expect.

Becoming Third Mate and over the years working up to the position of First Mate gave me such a great experience and knowledge in how to deal with not only people but situations, it has greatly helped me in life in general not just work.

Living with fellow crew on board for half a year at a time really pushed the limits of maintaining your sense of self but also really taught me how to learn who I was and what I was capable of. When you are living on a ship privacy and time to yourself does go out the door but what I got in return as far as lifelong friendships is incalculable.”
