No Stranger to the Sea

“Born on Long Island, NS, and raised on Brier Island, Amanda is no stranger of the sea! To come and go from Brier Island to the Mainland, you must take two ferries. Brought up in the fishing village of Westport, Amanda has lobster fished with her Father and Brothers. She has a well developed vast knowledge of the Bay of Fundy and it’s ecosystem. Learned through fishing and working as a Naturalist with her Parents whale watch company, Mariner Cruises.

With an urge to travel and learn, Amanda looked for work that would fulfill this desire. In 2002 she signed on as crew of Nova Scotia’s beloved Schooner Bluenose II, where she sailed for 3 seasons. From here she secured a berth aboard Picton Castle as part of her professional sailing crew for her 4th world voyage. This was a dream come true! Amanda’s tall ship sailing adventures continued onboard Class Afloat’s school ship Concordia as Bosun.

Finally in 2008, Amanda gave her sea legs a rest and put her thousands of sea time miles to use and obtained her Unlimited Watch Keeping Mates License. After returning to Picton Castle several times, Amanda has been employed with the Canadian Coast Guard since 2011. Sailing twice as 3rd mate in the Large Fleet and spending the rest of her time as a Lifeboatman with Rescue Specialist training, in the Small Fleet’s Search and Rescue program- where she and her CCGS Westport crew mates received a Certificate of Recognition for rescuing a missing diver in the Bay of Fundy.”
