About

The Nova Scotia Seamanship Education Society (NSSES) is a non-profit corporation and registered charity in Canada (Registration # – 81455 7039 RR0001).

Our Vision is to support excellence in the maritime industry.

Our mission is to support training and education in the maritime sector.

The Society was founded in 2014, due to the generous donation of a benefactor, and to date has provided over 50 scholarships and over $800,000, to young mariners (from around the world) wishing to pursue their education in seafaring and seamanship.

“It is the greatest opportunity that has been given to me, a Scholarship to sail on the Sail Training Ship Picton Castle. I am so grateful for that….It is a magnificent way to learn about the Maritime world…” – Vaiufia Latu, Tonga

We have been working to raise the profile of the Society, to build partnerships and offer more educational opportunities for young mariners through a variety of maritime organizations.

Why should you consider donating to the Nova Scotia Seamanship Education Society?

  • We are unique as a charity, in that we support mariners in their training opportunities, and therefore, the maritime community at large.
  • We are committed to workforce development, and with your support can continue to provide career growth opportunities in the maritime world, and beyond.
  • Most people are not aware of the diversity of jobs available in the maritime industry, and for many that are aware, the financial hurdles to gain experience, training, or certifications, can be discouraging or insurmountable, and we believe that gaining experience in the maritime world should be available to everyone who wishes to pursue this as a vocation, regardless of their background or finances.
  • The maritime industry at large is facing a shortage of skilled seafarers, and the crisis will only deepen. We wish to continue to be a part of the solution.

We look forward to continuing to grow our partnerships, with organizations that support teamwork, leadership, humbleness, and confidence.

A ship is an incredible teacher. The act of taking care of the ship (home), and your shipmates (your neighbour), is a daily lesson that necessitates the very learning of these skills. Mariners have the rare opportunity to see the connection between land and sea, between other cultures, between individuals in close quarters. They connect with their lived environment in visceral ways, out of necessity, and later, out of learned respect. Leaders are born of the sea.
